Titel des Forschungsprojektes:
Enhancing climate adaptation and resource conflict resolution using social networks for ecosystem services in Loitoktok, Kenya.
Mentor:
Prof. Dr. Jürgen Scheffran
Kurzbeschreibung des geförderten Projekts:
Adaptation and conflict resolution strategies formulated at the international level are not fully implemented due to poorly understood knowledge transfer linkages. This results in persistent “adaptation deficit” and resource conflict incidences in developing nations like Kenya as actor networks at the grassroots level utilise weak and erratic communication channels. In addition, Kenya’s current priority is to boost economic growth using revolving fund schemes to encourage employment using natural resources in the agriculture, tourism and trade sectors. These initiatives are successful but lack strong resource sustainability agendas which in future might potentially cause conflicts over scarce resources due to resource degradation and poor climate change adaptation. Therefore, using stakeholder network analysis this research will investigate an area predisposed to rapid land-use change, climate variability, immigration, urbanization and conflict. It will focus on stakeholders utilizing water, agri-culture, tourism and medicinal plants to reveal synergies and conflicts in adaptation and conflict resolution in Loitoktok district. It aims to expose gaps in knowledge transfer, iden-tify duplication by other agencies and evaluate actor linkage in conflict resolution. The results will then be used to enhance the transfer of sustainable knowledge within an eco-nomic development scenario. The final output will be incorporated in resource conserva-tion policies to expedite conflict-sensitive climate change response..
