WurzelWerk
WurzelWerk is an urban gardening project founded in 2015 by students from Universität Hamburg. The community garden space is located behind the building at Von-Melle-Park 11. Covering a total of 867 square meters, it enhances the diversity of vegetation on the campus.
WurzelWerk regards itself as “colorful mix of people who enjoy gardening and share a desire to create a public space together while increasing awareness of worldwide food problems.” (Wurzelwerk Facebook page). The garden is a place to relax, socialize, and inspire discussion on sustainability. Group members attach great importance to using only organic seeds and cultivation methods. Project members do not just aim to garden together but to organize workshops and provide information on gardening and food. The WurzelWerk team has, for example, taken part in the German Sustainability Days and organized an informational event on the topic of agricultural corporations versus alternative food networks with presentations by Vera Hampel (from the farm Hof vorm Deich) and Fabian Berger (from the Grünanteil project to promote green spaces in urban areas) on 30 May 2016.
The team also organized a screening of the documentary film Wenn ein Garten wächst (Ines Reinisch, 2014). The film follows the course of a gardening project that turns neighbors who previously had little contact into a genuine community with a sense of solidarity. The documentary also highlights important issues in the urban gardening movement.
